Albert Lebourg

1849-1928

Albert Lebourg painted landscapes with the luminous clarity of Impressionism, working across France, North Africa, and beyond. Born in Normandy in 1849, he studied at Rouen's École des Beaux-Arts before teaching in Algiers, where he met Jean Seignemartin and refined his technique. He exhibited in the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition of 1879 alongside Monet and Degas, showing thirty works from his Algerian period. For nearly fifty years he painted the Seine, Auvergne, and the French countryside with prolific energy—over 2,000 works recorded in his lifetime. A founding member of the Société des Artistes Français, he showed regularly at major Paris galleries and won the silver medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. Retrospectives in 1903 and 1918 confirmed his standing. He died in Rouen in 1928, honored as an Officer of the Legion of Honour.
