Katsushika Hokusai1831 · Woodblock print (nishiki-e), ink and colour on paper · 25,7 × 37,9 cm
Dominio público
Junto a un teléfono móvil · Aproximadamente del tamaño de una funda de disco de vinilo
Fuji sits back in the distance here, quieter and smaller than you might expect from Hokusai — this isn't the towering, wave-framed mountain of his most famous print. It's glimpsed through a gap between two hills, its snowy cap and rocky flanks rendered in that flat, almost stencil-like blue that ukiyo-e printmakers got by carving each colour onto its own block. The sky behind it fades from deep indigo at the top down through a warm, dusty peach near the horizon, a printer's trick called bokashi, where the block is inked unevenly to blend colours without a hard line.
What really carries the picture is the foreground: a steep, grassy pass cutting diagonally across the scene, dotted with tiny travelers and packhorses working their way along the trail. Follow the path and your eye slides from the bottom left, up past the loaded horses and the porter carrying gear on his back, over to two more figures climbing the green slope on the right. Fuji becomes almost a backdrop to their journey rather than the subject of it.
This print comes from Hokusai's series showing Mount Fuji from dozens of different vantage points around Japan, made when he was already an old man but still restless for new ways to frame the same mountain. Here the point seems to be less about the peak itself and more about the ordinary business of travel through mountain country, with the sacred mountain simply part of the view people lived and worked beside.
