The Umbrellas

A crowd of Parisians has been caught by the rain on a city street, and umbrellas open above them like a dark canopy — a whole flock of them, ribs and points overlapping so densely that the sky almost disappears behind them. Renoir plants us right in the middle of the crush. Look at the young woman closest to us, on the left: she carries a big open basket on her arm, dressed in dark blue-grey, and she turns slightly to glance back at us, as if we've just bumped into her on the pavement. Behind and around her, more figures huddle under their own umbrellas — a woman fussing with her collar, a little girl in a striped bonnet holding a hoop, other passersby reduced to hats, gloved hands, glimpses of coats.

Notice how differently some of these figures are painted. The woman with the basket is drawn with a firmer, cleaner outline, her dress smoothed into broad flat shapes, while the group beside her is built from looser, flickering strokes of blue and grey that let the damp light move across their clothes. That shift in touch, rather than being a flaw, tells you something about how Renoir was working at this moment — pulling away from the loose, sketch-like handling of his earlier Impressionist years toward a more solid, drawn structure, while still keeping the wet, silvery atmosphere of a rainy street. The result feels both immediate, like a photograph of a crowd, and carefully composed, with the umbrellas overhead unifying everyone into one soft, blue-grey world.
