Hokusai loved this trick throughout the Thirty-six Views series: hiding the mountain in plain sight, letting ordinary working life crowd right up to the edges of something sacred. The real subject of this picture is labor, not landscape. You&#39;re standing in a lumberyard on the outskirts of Edo, and everything around you is built from long straight lines — the raw timber stacked and bundled, the tall drying poles that shoot up like a forest of bamboo, the plank a carpenter braces on a sawhorse in the middle distance.</p><p>Follow the diagonal that runs from the man perched on the brick wall at upper left down through the worker crouched below him, then across the water to the man cutting wood.
