Jean-Baptiste Belin de Fontenay the Elder built his career as a specialist in flower painting at the court of Louis XIV. Born in Caen in 1653, he trained under Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, whose daughter he married and whose position as flower painter at the Gobelins manufactory he eventually inherited. When the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 threatened his Protestant faith, he converted to Catholicism rather than leave France, allowing him to continue working for the crown. His floral murals decorated royal residences including Fontainebleau and Versailles, where his work on the Queen's Staircase has since been lost. From 1687 he also supplied the flower borders framing portraits and tapestry cartoons produced at the Gobelins. Late in life the king granted him a pension and lodgings at the Louvre. He died in Paris in 1715; his son Jean-Baptiste Belin de Fontenay II carried the family's floral style forward. His paintings survive today in collections including the Louvre, Versailles, and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
