Salvador Dalí commanded an extraordinary range of artistic practices—painting, sculpture, film, jewelry, and theatrical design—yet remains best known for his virtuosity as a Surrealist. Born in Catalonia in 1904, he studied at Madrid's San Fernando Royal Academy before encountering Surrealism in Paris in 1926. The movement's exploration of consciousness and the subconscious proved transformative. Dalí developed his paranoiac-critical method, deliberately inducing paranoid states to access his subconscious, and created iconic works that interrogated the boundaries between reason and dream. His famous Venus de Milo with Drawers—adding bureau drawers to a classical statue—embodied Freudian psychology and Surrealist provocation. Though instrumental in shaping Surrealism, he famously declared "I myself am Surrealism!" and later distanced himself from the movement's orthodoxy. His later work turned toward science and religion while maintaining Surrealism's subversive power. He died in Figueres in 1989, his native region's most celebrated artist.
