Aelbrecht Bouts

Aelbrecht Bouts (c. 1452 – 1549) was a Flemish painter working in Leuven, the city of his birth and death, during the last generation of the Early Netherlandish tradition. He came from a dynasty of painters: his father was Dieric Bouts the Elder, and his brother, Dieric Bouts the Younger, inherited their father's workshop in 1475. Aelbrecht instead founded his own studio in Leuven, and where his brother continued their father's manner, Aelbrecht forged a distinct idiom marked by strong, saturated color, dense texture and meticulous detail, seen in devotional panels such as his Ecce Homo and Mater Dolorosa diptych. His workshop produced numerous religious images, many surviving in multiple versions, reflecting steady demand for devotional art in the southern Netherlands. His paintings are now held in major collections including the Prado, the Metropolitan Museum, the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, and the Honolulu Museum of Art, among others.
