Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Lawrence Alma-Tadema brought ancient Rome and Greece to life with luminous precision. Born in Dronryp, Netherlands in 1836, he trained in Antwerp under Gustaf Wappers and later Baron Jan August Hendrik Leys before his honeymoon visit to Pompeii in 1863 transformed his artistic vision. Captivated by the ruins and archaeological discoveries, he became the Victorian era's supreme painter of classical antiquity, rendering marble, luxurious interiors, and the daily life of the ancient world with meticulous accuracy. His jewel-toned, languid compositions of Roman decadence fascinated his contemporaries and influenced early cinema. Settling in London in 1870 after his first wife's death, he married Laura Theresa Epps, who became both artistic partner and muse. Elected to the Royal Academy and knighted in 1899, Alma-Tadema died in Wiesbaden in 1912. His work fell from favour after his death but has since been recognised as central to Victorian painting.
