Gerrit Dou

Gerrit Dou worked in Leiden throughout his career, developing a meticulous painting style that would define the fijnschilder movement. Beginning as a pupil of Rembrandt around 1628, he absorbed his master's command of chiaroscuro and color, then diverged into an increasingly refined technique all his own. Dou's small, jewel-like paintings—often depicting candlelit domestic scenes, genre subjects, and precise still lifes—demanded extraordinary patience; he famously spent days on a single hand and ground his own pigments with custom-made brushes. Working with a concave lens and mirror to achieve perfect accuracy, he created luminous effects of unparalleled fidelity. His reputation soared during his lifetime: wealthy collectors across Europe sought his works at premium prices, and Queen Christina of Sweden owned eleven paintings by him. Though he eventually abandoned portraiture because sitters could not spare him the extended sittings he required, his mastery of light and miniaturist detail left over two hundred paintings that influenced generations of Dutch artists.
