Léon Bonnat

Léon Bonnat trained in Madrid under Federico de Madrazo before settling in Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1854. After a scholarship from his native Bayonne enabled him to work in Rome from 1858 to 1861, he began exhibiting at the Salon, building a reputation for powerful naturalistic works in dramatic chiaroscuro that critics compared to Spanish Old Masters like Ribera. By the 1860s, he received commissions from the French government, private collectors, and the imperial court across history, religious, and mythological subjects; monumental paintings by him remain in situ in Parisian churches and public buildings. From the 1870s onward, Bonnat became internationally renowned as a portraitist commanding high fees, his style sharpening into exaggerated realism. He taught at his own atelier from the late 1860s and eventually joined the Académie in the 1880s. A passionate art collector, particularly of drawings, Bonnat established the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne in 1902 to house his collections, a legacy that came to define his reputation as much as his own painting.
