A seated child surrounded by floral forms, leaves, and berries. Butterfly-like shapes emerging from the head represent spiritual transformation in Morrisseau's iconography — the figure in communion with nature and the spirit world.
This is a Norval Morrisseau painting. The signature in the bottom right is in Cree syllabics his traditional way of signing works "Copper Thunderbird" (Miskwaabik Animiki).
Classic Woodland School / Anishinaabe pictographic style. All the hallmarks are here — bold black "formlines" outlining every shape, vibrant flat colours (that signature orange background), circular "power dots" or spirit circles connecting the forms, and the X-ray style showing inner spiritual energy through concentric circles and divided colour fields within the figure.
The painting depicts a seated figure — likely a child or young person given the proportions — surrounded by floral and organic forms (flowers, leaves, berries). The butterfly-like forms emerging from or surrounding the head often represent spiritual transformation or the soul in Morrisseau’s iconography. The figure appears to be in communion with nature, a recurring theme in his work connecting humans to the natural and spirit worlds.
