Trained first as an architect, Jasper Francis Cropsey brought a builder's precision to the rolling hills and lakes of the American countryside, becoming one of the Hudson River School's leading painters. Works like Greenwood Lake and Autumn Landscape, Sugar Loaf Mountain show his signature gift: skies and foliage rendered in brilliantly saturated autumn color, where the American landscape becomes almost luminous, treated as something grand and worth national pride.
