Artist community
Agnes Lawrence Pelton was born in Stuttgart in 1881 to American parents and grew up between Europe and Brooklyn before training at the Pratt Institute, where she studied alongside Max Weber and later assisted her teacher Arthur Wesley Dow. Two of her early, light-filled "Imaginative Paintings" were shown at the 1913 Armory Show. A 1919 visit to Taos redirected her work toward the American Southwest, producing portraits of Pueblo people and desert landscapes; a stay in Hawaii in 1923–24 yielded further landscapes and still lifes.
