Alfredo Jaar

Alfredo Jaar creates conceptual and political works that investigate documentary photographs and how they are received—or suppressed—in public culture. Born in Santiago in 1956, he studied filmmaking and architecture before moving to New York in 1982. His installations combine photographs with maps, text, and other elements to examine themes of human dignity, poverty, and oppression, often drawing on images from developing countries.
