Kees van Dongen brought Fauvism's raw energy to portraiture. Born in Rotterdam in 1877, he moved to Paris in 1899, where he worked as an illustrator before joining the Fauves at the 1905 Salon d'Automne. His paintings from 1905 to 1910 remain his most celebrated: vivid, sensuous portraits of dancers, singers, and theatre performers, rendered in bold colour and distorted form. After World War I, his technical brilliance made him the fashionable portraitist of choice for European high society and royalty, though some saw this success as a retreat from his earlier bohemian radicalism.
