Giovanni Bellini dominated Venetian painting across nearly nine decades, from around 1430 until his death in 1516. He transformed the city's visual language, moving it from the precise tempera work of the early Quattrocento toward a sumptuous, atmospheric style grounded in oil paint. After mastering this technique—introduced to Venice by Antonello da Messina—Bellini created works of unprecedented spiritual depth, where colour and light became primary vehicles for devotion.
