モーリス・ド・ヴラマンク

Maurice de Vlaminck painted with the intensity of someone who trusted nothing but his own instinct. Born in Paris in 1876, he left home as a teenager and spent years playing violin and riding bicycles before meeting André Derain on a train in 1899. Together they rented a studio in Chatou, west of Paris, and Vlaminck began painting landscapes around the Seine with violent colour and urgent brushwork. By 1905 he was among the Fauves scandalizing the Salon d'Automne—along with Matisse and Derain—with raw, expressive painting that made critics brand them wild beasts.
