Georges Rouault painted the anguish of the world through heavy black contours and jewel-like colors, a style shaped by his teenage years as a glass painter and restorer. Born in Paris in 1871 to a poor family, he studied under Symbolist master Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he met Matisse. Though often associated with Fauvism, Rouault remained a solitary figure, pursuing his own vision. From the 1900s onward, he depicted society's margins—clowns, prostitutes, the dispossessed—as meditations on human suffering.
