Biography
モーリス・ユトリロ
Artist community
Maurice Utrillo painted the streets of Paris with an intensity born from struggle. Born in Montmartre in 1883 to the artist Suzanne Valadon, he found solace in painting as treatment for alcoholism and mental illness beginning in his early twenties. Working largely from Montmartre and its surroundings, he developed a distinctive vision of urban landscape—alleyways, churches, and modest corners rendered with an almost spiritual quiet. His early works, from roughly 1909 to the mid-1920s, are suffused with a characteristic pale, luminous white that became his signature.
