Grandma Moses began painting at 78, transforming a lifetime of rural labor and domestic creativity into a distinguished art career. Born Anna Mary Robertson in Greenwich, New York in 1860, she worked as a farmhand and housekeeper before marrying Thomas Moses and raising ten children on farms in Virginia and New York. When arthritis made embroidery difficult, she turned to oil painting, discovering in those scenes of "old-timey" countryside a way to preserve vanishing ways of life.
