Roy Lichtenstein transformed comic books and advertisements into monumental paintings that challenged the boundaries between high art and popular culture. Born in Manhattan in 1923, he emerged in the early 1960s as a leading figure of Pop Art, developing his signature style of bold outlines, flat colors, and meticulously hand-rendered Ben-Day dots—the mechanical printing technique of commercial reproduction. Drawing inspiration from comic panels, war stories, and romantic imagery, Lichtenstein created works of deceptive simplicity that commented on mass media and modern visual culture.
