Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn painted the spiritual and the everyday with equal intensity. Born in Leiden in 1606, he rose to prominence in Amsterdam as a portrait painter before becoming one of the greatest artists in Western history. He excelled at capturing light and shadow to convey emotion—earning the nickname "painter of light"—across paintings, etchings, and drawings. The Night Watch, his masterpiece of 1642, transformed the group portrait into something dramatic and alive.
