Constance Mayer (1775–1821) painted portraits, miniatures, genre scenes and allegorical works in Paris during the Neoclassical period. Trained by Joseph-Benoît Suvée and Jean-Baptiste Greuze, she adopted their soft brushwork and sentimental subjects before studying with Jacques-Louis David in 1801. From 1802 she worked closely with Pierre-Paul Prud'hon, an arrangement that blurred the line between student and peer: while Prud'hon sketched designs, Mayer executed many paintings, though they were often attributed to him.
