John Everett Millais emerged from the Royal Academy Schools as a prodigy and became a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1847. His early works, especially Ophelia (1851–52), embodied the movement's devotion to naturalistic detail and fidelity to visual experience. By the mid-1850s, responding to the pressures of supporting a growing family—he and his wife Effie had eight children—Millais shifted toward a broader, more commercially successful style.
