William-Adolphe Bouguereau dominated French academic painting in the nineteenth century, painting mythological and religious subjects with a mastery of the human form that made him wealthy and celebrated during his lifetime. Born in La Rochelle in 1825, he won the Prix de Rome in 1850 and spent formative years in Italy studying the Renaissance masters. For five decades he exhibited at the Paris Salon, creating idealized nudes, graceful portraits, and allegorical works that appealed to wealthy patrons across Europe and America.
