Claes Oldenburg transformed the mundane into the monumental. Born in Stockholm in 1929 and raised in Chicago and New York, he emerged in the 1950s as a painter and performer before becoming the defining sculptor of pop art. His vast public installations—a lipstick on tank tracks, a clothespin taller than a building, a spoon and cherry in a garden—began as objects of ridicule before winning over the public with their wit and formal audacity.
