Harada Naojirō was a Tokyo-born yōga painter whose brief career spanned the turbulent early decades of Western painting in Japan. After studying under Takahashi Yuichi, Japan's leading Western-style painter, he spent two years in Munich from 1884, apprenticing with Gabriel von Max and absorbing German academic technique alongside Romantic influences. He befriended Mori Ōgai there and became the model for a character in Ōgai's fiction.
