Antoine Bourdelle (1861–1929) shaped modern sculpture through a distinctive synthesis of classical form and expressive power. Born in Montauban, he began as a woodcarver in his father's workshop before training in Toulouse and Paris, where he earned a place at the École des Beaux-Arts. Working with Auguste Rodin from 1893 to 1908 proved transformative; Rodin championed his work, yet Bourdelle forged his own voice emphasizing geometric clarity and structural invention. His 1909 Hercules the Archer—depicting the mythological hero drawing his bow with coiled energy—became his masterwork.
