Sakai Hōitsu (1761–1829) revived the Rinpa tradition for the Edo period. Born into the Sakai daimyō family of Himeji, he trained first in the Kanō school, then studied ukiyo-e under Utagawa Toyoharu and other masters before turning to Rinpa in his thirties. In 1797, he took Buddhist vows and entered a quiet life of artistic devotion in Edo. There he became obsessed with Ogata Kōrin's legacy, organizing commemorative exhibitions, publishing illustrated catalogs, and producing works that merged Kōrin's decorative brilliance with contemporary techniques from the Maruyama and literati schools.
