Cai Guo-Qiang harnesses gunpowder as his primary medium, creating explosive drawings, large-scale pyrotechnic events, and installations that collapse the boundary between destruction and creation. Born in Quanzhou in 1957 and trained in stage design at Shanghai Theater Academy, he moved to Japan in 1986 and later to New York, where he has become one of the most prominent contemporary artists working today. His practice draws extensively from Chinese cultural traditions—feng shui, martial narratives, socialist imagery—while addressing themes of conflict, beauty, and cross-cultural dialogue.
