Yoshiharu Tsuge made comics that felt like dreams. Working in the rental manga boom of the 1950s, he began with dark, hard-boiled stories before the avant-garde magazine Garo gave him space for something stranger. Between 1965 and 1970, he created his most celebrated works—surrealist tales layered with memory, poverty, and travel, where ordinary and impossible things coexist. Screw Style, his 1968 masterpiece, follows a youth through a backwards village seeking a doctor for his severed artery, speaking to alienated 1960s readers.
