下村観山

Kanzan Shimomura (1873–1930) was a master of nihonga, the Japanese painting tradition, whose career spanned the Meiji and early Shōwa periods. Born into a family of Noh actors in Wakayama, he moved to Tokyo as a child and studied under the great Kanō Hōgai, then Hashimoto Gahō. After graduating from Tokyo's art school in 1889, he became a teacher there, but joined Okakura Tenshin's pioneering Japan Fine Arts Academy in 1898 alongside Yokoyama Taikan and Hishida Shunsō.
