Takashi Murakami works across painting, sculpture, film, and commercial media, creating art that dissolves boundaries between high and low culture. Born in Tokyo in 1962, he studied traditional Japanese painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, earning a doctorate in Nihonga before turning toward contemporary practice. In the 1990s, he developed Superflat theory, tracing a lineage of flat, two-dimensional imagery from historical Japanese art through manga and anime to postmodern culture.
