川合玉堂

Kawai Gyokudō (1873–1957) was a master of nihonga landscape painting who shaped Japanese art across the Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods. Born in Aichi Prefecture to a merchant family, he studied under several prominent teachers before moving to Tokyo in 1896 to study with Hashimoto Gahō. He became a founding member of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Fine Art Academy) alongside Okakura Tenshin and Yokoyama Taikan, and later taught at Tokyo's premier art school.
