Yoko Ono creates work that dissolves boundaries between art, music, and activism. Born in Tokyo in 1933 to a banking family, she moved to New York as a young adult and became central to the 1960s avant-garde, collaborating with John Cage's students and Fluxus artists like George Maciunas. Her early conceptual pieces—Painting to Be Stepped On, Cut Piece, the instruction-based Grapefruit—invited audiences to complete artworks, questioning what art could be. She married musician John Lennon in 1969 and together they conducted public peace protests during the Vietnam War.
