ジャン＝バティスト・パテル

Jean-Baptiste Pater carried forward the elegant world of the fête galante after his influential teacher Antoine Watteau. Born in Valenciennes in 1695, he first learned sculpture from his father before turning to painting under local masters and then Watteau in Paris. Their relationship was difficult; after quarreling, Pater returned to Valenciennes for two years until 1721, when the dying Watteau reconciled with him. Though their reunion lasted only weeks before Watteau's death, Pater claimed those final lessons shaped his entire art.
