Gerrit Dou worked in Leiden throughout his career, developing a meticulous painting style that would define the fijnschilder movement. Beginning as a pupil of Rembrandt around 1628, he absorbed his master's command of chiaroscuro and color, then diverged into an increasingly refined technique all his own. Dou's small, jewel-like paintings—often depicting candlelit domestic scenes, genre subjects, and precise still lifes—demanded extraordinary patience; he famously spent days on a single hand and ground his own pigments with custom-made brushes.
