Jean Siméon Chardin painted ordinary life with an intensity that elevated it into art. Born in Paris in 1699, the son of a cabinetmaker, he trained under history painters but found his subject in still lifes and domestic scenes—kitchen maids, children at play, modest meals. His work stood apart from the decorative Rococo that surrounded it, built instead on careful composition, soft light, and genuine feeling. In 1728, after presenting The Ray and The Buffet to the Academy, he was admitted as a member.
