Jacob Jordaens was a Flemish Baroque painter who spent his entire career in Antwerp, never traveling to Italy as his contemporaries did. Born in 1593 to a wealthy linen merchant, he trained under Adam van Noort and became one of the city's leading artists after Rubens's death in 1640. Jordaens worked across genres—altarpieces, mythological scenes, and biblical narratives—but is best remembered for large-scale genre paintings depicting Flemish proverbs and festivities, such as The King Drinks and As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young.
