藤原信実

Fujiwara no Nobuzane was a leading portrait painter of 13th-century Japan, equally accomplished in both visual art and poetry. Born in 1176, he came from the artistic tradition of his father Fujiwara Takanobu and would found a lineage of portraitists—the Hachijō family—that endured into the Muromachi period. His distinctive technique layered fine brushstrokes to capture subtle likenesses, evident in works like the celebrated portrait believed to be of Emperor Go-Toba at Minase Shrine.
