Nicolas Mignard spent most of his career in Avignon as a painter of religious scenes and decorations for churches and grand houses, earning the name Mignard d'Avignon. Born in Troyes in 1606, he trained with local masters and at Fontainebleau before studying with Simon Vouet in Paris. A formative trip to Rome around 1636, where he worked making prints after Annibale Carracci, shaped his classical Baroque style. When Louis XIV visited Avignon in 1660, Mignard painted courtiers including Cardinal Mazarin, who then summoned him to Paris.
