Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, painted Venice and the wider world with a clarity and atmospheric sensitivity that captivated eighteenth-century collectors. Born in Venice in 1697 to a theatrical scene painter, he trained in Rome before returning to master the veduta—the precise cityscape—drawing inspiration from the Roman painter Pannini. His early works, painted outdoors and notable for their sharp perspective and luminous rendering of light, quickly earned him a following among British Grand Tourists.
