ジョルジュ・デヴァリエール

George Desvallières emerged from a cultivated Parisian background—his great-grandfather was the poet and playwright Gabriel-Marie Legouvé—and studied portraiture at the Académie Julian and École des Beaux-Arts under Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Valadon. His encounter with Gustave Moreau redirected his art toward mythology and religious subjects rendered in the symbolist manner: dark, intense, and dramatically conceived. A trip to Italy in 1890 deepened his engagement with art history.
