エルネスト・ローラン

Ernest Laurent was a French painter born in Gentilly in 1859 who studied under Henri Lehmann at the École des Beaux-Arts alongside Georges Seurat and Amand-Jean. He initially embraced new impressionism but gradually diverged from the group's scientific approach, drawn instead toward symbolism and religious themes. A mystical experience during a visit to Assisi after winning the Prix de Rome in 1889 proved transformative, leading him to develop a distinctive style infused with spiritual imagery. This spiritual direction distinguished his work from Seurat's more materialist concerns.
