Jacques-Émile Blanche became one of the most sought-after portrait painters of late nineteenth-century Europe, working from both London and Paris. Born into a cultured Parisian household—his father was a prominent psychiatrist—he grew up surrounded by artists and writers, though he remained largely self-taught in painting, studying briefly with Henri Gervex and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Drawing inspiration from eighteenth-century English portraitists like Gainsborough and his contemporaries Manet and Sargent, Blanche developed a distinctive style that made him a favourite among European society.
