Kansuke Yamamoto emerged as a pivotal figure in Japan's avant-garde through his practice across photography, poetry, publishing, and collage. Based in Nagoya from 1931 onward, he encountered Surrealism through French literary channels and developed it as a visual method rather than mere style. In 1938, he founded Yoru no Funsui, a landmark journal bringing together Surrealist poetry, photographs, and translations until wartime censorship ended it in 1939. Despite interrogation by the Special Higher Police, Yamamoto resisted stripping Surrealism of its political and provocative force.
