Dieric Bouts was born in Haarlem around 1410–1415 and settled in Leuven by 1457, where he remained until his death in 1475. Working in the Early Netherlandish tradition, he was influenced by Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, possibly studying under the latter. Bouts achieved city painter status in Leuven in 1468 and became one of the first northern European painters to master linear perspective with a single vanishing point, as demonstrated in his *Last Supper* (1464–1467)—the first Flemish panel painting of that subject.
