Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino—a nickname meaning 'squinter,' earned from his crossed eyes—was a Baroque painter of extraordinary productivity who dominated religious art from the 1610s until his death. Born in Cento, between Bologna and Ferrara, he worked in Rome under Pope Gregory XV from 1621 to 1623, creating luminous frescoes and altarpieces including the celebrated St. Petronilla Altarpiece for the Vatican. After returning to Emilia, he moved his workshop to Bologna in 1642, becoming the city's leading painter of sacred subjects.
