Albert Gleizes (1881–1953) was a French painter, theorist, and founding figure of Cubism who pushed the movement toward color, design, and decoration. Born in Paris to a family of industrial designers, he gravitated toward painting after military service, beginning with Impressionism before evolving through Post-Impressionism toward geometric abstraction. From 1910, he was central to Cubism's public emergence, organizing exhibitions at the Salon des Indépendants and Salon d'Automne that brought the controversial new style to wide attention.
