マールテン・ド・フォス

Maerten de Vos dominated religious painting in Antwerp during the latter sixteenth century, becoming the most prominent history painter in the Spanish Netherlands after the Iconoclastic Fury of 1566 destroyed much of Flanders' church art. Born in Antwerp in 1532, he trained under his father before traveling to Italy around 1550, where he absorbed Venetian color and likely worked in Tintoretto's studio. Returning in 1558, he received his mastership from the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke and built a streamlined workshop that met enormous demand.
